My stay at W, Bangkok

While in Bangkok for 5 days, I wanted to split my time between two very different hotel chains so I can have a well rounded and knowledgable experience. So my second hotel that I stayed at was The W, Bangkok. 

From the moment I pulled through the gates of the hotel, I was warmly greeted by the bell staff. The first thing that really stood out to me was the futuristic doors to the lobby of the hotel. As soon as I saw the massive silver doors open as if I was about to enter the Star Trek Voyager spaceship I knew I was in for a completely different experience. Midway to the reception desk, I was greeted by the concierge and walked me up to the front desk. At checkin I decided to wait for the Corner Suite room  so I checked-in my luggage and continued my sight seeing at the Grand Palace. As soon as the heat got the best of me, I sought refuge back at the hotel. I walked up to my suite to find a very modern and youthful decor sprinkled delicately with Asian accents. The room was fabulous but the big “WOW” factor for me was the bathroom. The bathroom was very classically modern with fogged glass separating the shower and toilet from the rest of the area and that big bathtub. I couldn’t wait to take a bubble bath! Another great feature was the bath products all being from the Bliss line. I’m a big fan of the line and was excited that’s what The W offered. I quickly unpacked and showered before my dinner that night.

The next day I woke up and headed down to breakfast at The Kitchen Table Restaurant only to find the most decadent and elaborate breakfast spread I’ve ever had at any hotel so far! It was a fat kid’s dream. Everything you can possibly imagine. Numerous cheese assortments, pastries, egg dishes made to order, fruit, juices, noodles, rice, sushi… The list goes on and on! I ended up sampling a maple raisin Danish, a croissant, guava juice, 3 fried eggs, a cappuccino and a little toast. 

While on property, I was so intrigued by the hotel decor that I asked for a tour. I was taken to all the different rooms, which were all beautifully decorated, especially the presidential suite. We also toured the hotel,  restaurants and spa. 

Throughout the hotel were many accents of Thai culture which I appreciated immensely. Although the hotel was only four years old, it tried to incorporate the local history and culture. For example, most of the art was done by local artists. I specifically thought the art installation by the elevators in the lobby was beautiful! Inspired by the tuk-tuks and the vibrant nightlife of Bangkok. Another art piece that stood out to me was the Tiger and Phoenix in the lobby and lobby bar. They stand for strength and power and staying with that theme the lobby bar was decorated with a Thai Boxing theme in mind. The lobby bar was pretty busy every night it seemed and even has a DJ spinning on the weekends. The restaurant (Kitchen Table) was inspired by the old Thai children’s fairy tale of the crocodile story called Krai Thong. Even the spiral staircase that went through the middle of the hotel was decorated with small clear plastic bags filled with water as that is what the Thai people used to used long ago to drink water. Passing by the pool, I immediately noticed the two Siamese cats decorating the pool which from a birds eye looked like a lined eye. I also really appreciated the graffiti art by the pool bar from the Thai artist Alex Face. 

When it was time for my spa treatment, I made my way past the gym and was greeted with a wet towel and tea by the spa staff. I filled out a quick questionnaire and was walked back into the changing room to store my belongings then started my Black Diamond Treatment. What’s really neat about their treatment rooms at the W Spa is the decor. On top of it being an extremely serene stone oasis, each treatment room is a different color and luckily they had purple so that was my choice. They first started with a body scrub after which I showered, then they applied a diamond powder mask which is great for skin brightening and moisturizing. After the body mask I had a relaxing oil massage and even had time to use the steam room but I was too excited for that bubble bath in my room so I hurried back up.

That night I probably had one of the best tasting menus of my life at The House on Sathorn restaurant. The building itself has so much history that dining there was such a treat. It was a house originally built by the person who financed the building of the Sathorn Road that the W now stands on. Then, it was the Russian Embassy in Bangkok and even a boutique hotel before it was transitioned into the fine dining restaurant it is now. Although the atmosphere is very upscale, you can see the head Chef, Fathih sitting at the bar conversing with the diners about the uniquely creative dishes he’s created into his tasting menu inspired by his travels in Asia. He even came to my table a few times to introduce some of the dishes and check to see how my dining experience was. I must say I had nothing to complain about and I left completely enthralled with the restaurant and its unique dishes. I was so concentrated on the food I almost forgot about the cocktails which were equally tasty!

I went to bed that night buzzing with culinary inspiration and wished I could stay a few more nights at the hotel but unfortunately Korea was next on the list and my flight was already booked.

I would highly recommend the W, Bangkok if you want a hip and very trendy hotel with Thai inspiration at every corner. The price is around $180 a night but worth every penny! I would definitely stay there again and have another go at all their wonderful amenities!
