As the new year is fast approaching, I started thinking, as I assume most have, about my new years resolution. At first, all the normal stuff ran through my head: progress with my fitness goals, spend less, be more mindful of the present… but then i thought, “why am I setting a new years resolution in the first place?
I get it’s a new year. A fresh start. A chance to be better. But why do we only think about this stuff at the end of the year? Half the time, we set goals and don’t even make it past January before we feel defeated.
So how do we avoid the pitfalls of unattained new years resolutions? Easy!
- Set attainable goals. If you want to loose weight, set a goal of 5lbs and once loose that weight I know you will push harder to loose more. You need to encourage yourself. Give yourself a pat on the back if you reach the half point of your goal. Take a moment and be mindful of what you were able to achieve this far.
- Don’t compare your self to others. Although most of us get competitive with friends and family, we all need to remember that we are all different and cant necessarily strive for the same goal in the same way. For example, ill stick with the weight loss example because I see it too often. Two best friends both want to loose 10 lbs. One is making faster progress although they are doing the same workout and eating the same things. Often times, the one thats behind gets frustrated and gives up and often becomes resentful in the process.
- Set a goal that benefits others. One example might be opening doors for the elderly. I guarantee every time you do, it will put a smile on your face as well as the other person. Not to mention that will be leading by example.
- Theres nothing wrong in setting a self improvement new years resolutions. Maybe you need to be more outgoing or not so hard on yourself. These are important goals as well because it leads to a happier life for yourself.
- Set multiple resolutions in different aspects of your life. Work, personal life, family, dating, children… this will help you write down the things you know you can improve on in multiple areas of your life. Recognizing the areas you want to improve on is a great way be more mindful.
- Lastly, WRITE IT DOWN! I don’t know why writing things in why phone has never been an effective method for me. I look at my phone so much that it becomes a mindless act these days. I find it more useful to write important things I want to followup on in a notebook or a piece of paper. A while back I came up with this checklist to help me achieve my new years resolutions so I will share it with you all and hope it helps some of you out.
