A fun and lively mix of art, culture, history, and delicious food, there’s so much to do, see and explore in Chicago any time of year. Word on the street about Chicago lately leaves outsider’s with talk of the World Series (Go, Cubs!), and a reputation for being “The Windy City”, but there’s much more to experience in Chicago than makes the headlines. Check out my highlight’s from my recent trip to Chicago, and see my top 5 recommendations for things to do next time you visit Chicago.
- Visit the Landmarks, Historical Spots and Museums
Millennium Park
Millennium Park is a public park in Chicago and important historical landmark. Originally designed and created in celebration of the second millennium, the landmark is now a popular tourist attraction. The park is considered to be one of the city’s most important projects, took 4 years to finish construction, and is praised for its green design. The park is also home to the Jay Pritzker Pavilion, the Crown Fountain, the Cloud Gate sculpture, and the world’s largest rooftop garden. Make sure you check out the park in Chicago, as it stands as the city’s proudest attraction.
Cloud Gate, AKA “The Bean”
The Cloud Gate Sculpture, popularly referred to as “The Bean” for obvious reasons, is a famous sculpture by famous artist Anish Kapoor. Seen in many different movies, and famous for being a popular landmark and icon in Chicago, this sculpture makes for a fun warped selfie, and is certainly a cool piece of art for this city. Check it out
Chicago’s is home to dozens of museums, galleries and exhibits including The Art Institute of Chicago, The Field Museum, the Shedd Aquarium, Museum of Science and Industry, and much more. Whether art, history, culture, or science strikes your fancy, there are many ways to see some spectacular sights and learn more in one of Chicago’s many famous attractions.
2. Catch A Live Show
Chicago’s live entertainment sector adds even more to the allure of the city. Spice up your night with a live show in one of Chicago’s 200+ theatres, s. It’s a perfect for a fun date or a family friendly night out. Whether it’s a live dance, opera performance, or play, you’re sure to have a unique experience.
3. Enjoy the Nightlife
The city of Chicago turns into a whole new world after nightfall. With live entertainment, a boisterous bar scene, and beautiful skyline, the city illuminates at night. Whether you’re looking for a casual bar, popular club, or a sultry atmosphere for a few drinks, there is something for everyone in the city. After a long day of walking and museum touring, grab a friend or two and explore the exciting nightlife Chicago has to offer.
Bottled Blonde
Once again adding to the theme of Chicago’s live entertainment vibe, Bottled Blonde is a great place to check out if you’re looking for some great live music. This Lounge and bar had a great atmosphere, good drinks, and an energetic crowd. The place was packed, but for good reason. If you’re looking for a lively atmosphere and aren’t afraid of a crowd, I’d definitely recommend checking out the Bottled Blond in the day for some delish Italian food, or in the evening for vibrant nightlife.
4. Eat at a Diner
Eleven City Diner
This classic diner is exactly what you would think a classic Chicago diner would be. Nostalgic music, amazing food, and great hot coco are the theme at Eleven City; this diner was a favorite of mine from the trip. If you’re searching for a go-to spot and an old-fashioned theme with food sure to satisfy, then check out Eleven City Diner. The service was excellent, and the surrounding area has great art I would recommend checking out before or after your meal.
Yolk
There’s so much more to Yolk than just a good plate of eggs. This bright spot also serves lunch foods, unique menu items that take a fun twist on traditional dishes, and all with a fun atmosphere and smiling servers. I recommend Yolk for a casual, yet fun breakfast or lunch spot when in Chicago.
5. Eat Italian Food
Do not leave Chicago without eating Italian food. Period. Chicago knows Italian food, and they know pizza. Treat yourself at one of the many classic Italian restaurants such as Lou Malnati’s Pizzeria, home to the mouth-watering deep dish pizza pie pictured below. Proclaimed by many to be the best pizzeria in the city, if you’re looking for a classic Chicago-style pizza (which you should be), then check out Lou’s. You won’t be disappointed.
