I start every morning with a cup of coffee, it is a must in my daily routine and something I truly look forward to. And as an avid coffee drinker, I have tried making coffee in every which way: using pods in a machine, on the stove, using a French press, instant coffee, etc. You name it, I’ve probably tried it. With my life being constantly on-the-go, I often praise my Nespresso machine. It’s fast, versatile, and makes great tasting coffee and espresso. But today I thought I’d share some other, simple ways of ensuring you have a great cup of coffee right at home.
Make sure you like the smell: The simplest way to start making coffee you love at home is to smell the coffee before you leave the store. Taste is subjective and differs person to person, so trust your own taste when buying coffee. The better the coffee beans smell to you, the better they will taste.
Grind your own coffee beans: If you want your coffee to have its full flavor, buy whole coffee beans at the store instead of coffee grounds. Coffee loses a significant amount of its flavor within 30 minutes of being ground, so grind your own coffee beans immediately before brewing and you’ll ensure a better cup of coffee. This may sound more complicated, but the coffee grinder works fast and won’t take up much more of your time. A coffee grinder is also affordable and can be purchased for less than twenty dollars, not a bad price for endless cups of amazing coffee!
Temperature: Making sure your coffee is brewing and being consumed at the right temperature is important to getting that great coffee flavor. Anything too hot will lose flavor, and too cold will taste sour. If you are not using an automated machine and using a French press or pour over, the water should be between 195°F-205°F. When it’s time to drink the coffee, many people prefer different temperatures, but the range to drink your coffee and maintain its flavor is between 120°F-175°F. To test this, you can use a kitchen thermometer. If you don’t already have one, they are also affordable at around five to ten dollars and can be used for many different types of cooking.
Add something extra: If you have time and want to make your coffee a little more special, a milk frother is also an inexpensive coffee investment. It gives you that foamy latte drink right at home and is something I’m always glad I have around. Another easy way to make your coffee special is to try using different milks and creamers. When I grocery shop, I’m always looking for new flavors to try out, especially during the winter months there’s always something new.
I love coffee, and being able to make a great cup at home is the motivation I need sometimes to get out of bed and get going for the day!
