It’s no secret that I love using makeup, experimenting with different makeup looks is one of my favorite things to do. However, the health of my skin always comes first. Makeup and skin health don’t usually go hand in hand. We all use makeup to create a perfect complexion, but it is often having the opposite effect on our skin. The benefits of going makeup free may actually result in a better complexion than can be achieved with makeup.
Benefits of wearing less makeup:
Smaller pores- When makeup is applied to the face it enters our pores. This build up in our pores grows with each makeup application, resulting in clogged and enlarged pores. Cutting back on makeup use reduces this build up, minimizing the size of pores. Overall the complexion will become smoother and more refined.
Reduced skin irritation and breakouts- If you have sensitive skin makeup is not your friend. Many types of makeup are made with toxins that clog pores, damage skin cells and are known to cause skin allergies. Additionally, makeup and makeup brushes are notorious for hosting lots of bacteria, which are then applied to the skin. This can lead to infection, breakouts and/or redness and inflammation of the skin. Reducing makeup use is all around more hygienic and will show an immediate decrease in skin irritation.
Reduced fine lines and wrinkles- The residue left behind by makeup can impede the process of shedding dead skin cells. When dead skin cells are not shed as intended, there are now layers of skin on the surface with no elasticity that begin to wrinkle and sag. These dead skin cells also age the skin by leaving the skin looking dull and dry. Wrinkles and fine lines are also caused by the rubbing and pulling of skin that happens during makeup application, doing this over and over to the skin causes it to loose elasticity and begin to sag. Reducing makeup use will leave the skin looking brighter and more youthful.
More sleep- Think about how long it takes you to get ready in the morning, now subtract the time it takes to do your makeup. It may not seem that significant, but your body will thank you. Being able to sleep for an extra thirty minutes to an hour a day has significant health and skin benefits. Sleep is when our body rejuvenates itself, mentally and physically. Taking the time to sleep instead of applying makeup will improve the health and youthfulness of your skin, as well as make you mentally sharper throughout your day.
Increased confidence- Going without makeup may be nerve racking, especially if you are dealing with blemishes or other skin irritations, but overcoming that fear will drastically improve the health of your skin and your mind. Getting used to your face without makeup is empowering, it is saying that you are beautiful and powerful just as you are. Because you are beautiful and powerful without makeup! Removing that fear and becoming confident in your own skin makes you truly unstoppable.
It may not be easy to cut out makeup all at once, but if you can do it gradually your skin will start improving and you’ll have less and less you want to cover up. The less makeup you use, the less you’ll feel you need!
