As our understanding of the food industry deepens and frankly scares us with the cold hard truth about producing for the masses, some people are turning to more ethical ways of eating like going vegan. Not only does going vegan have positive ethical ramifications but it can help with gut and digestive health as well as helping the environment. With all these facts in the pro column, why shouldn’t the vegan lifestyle be a better choice for us all including our lovable pets? So the real question is, should your dog go vegan?
I recently came across a food brand for pets that is completely vegan while maintaining the nutritional value your dog needs to be healthy. Wild Earth, a biotech startup hailing from Berkeley, California has found a way to make dog food vegan! They have figured out how to make clean protein for the dog food from a fungi-based protein. Superior Nutrition with a minimal eco-footprint. Sounds too good to be true? Let’s dive deeper…
Wild Earth is using fungi cells made of yeast and koji (traditionally used to make soy sauce and miso) to replace dog food’s primary animal-based protein. These fungi are high in protein and contain a special fiber called beta-glucans which help with immunity, gut health, and better poops. With no preservatives, by-products, or artificial flavors it stands up against the rest. But what I really love is that there are no caged kennel taste testing going on. They only use volunteer-based taste testers (say that three times fast.)
Our pets are our furry babies and if we are willing to treat our bodies like temples and be very conscious of what we put in them then why shouldn’t we do the same for our pets’ diet? I love that Wild Earth gives us that option and an avenue for great dog nutrition while being environmentally friendly.
Although Wild Earth is pretty new to the pet food scene Marlo, our adorable German Shepherd loves the food and the doggy treats! Her favorite being the banana and cinnamon flavor. So if you are ever interested in trying out a new plant-based doggy food definitely look into Wild Earth.
Wild Earth is unique because it’s a science-driven company. The food was developed by a team of scientists, veterinarians and animal nutritionists aiming to make the healthiest, most complete dog food available. With 31% protein, it’s the highest protein plant-based kibble and exceeds many of the meat-based kibbles.
Now that you’re more informed about the many choices out there for dog food, I hope you check out Wild Earth if that is the direction you would like to go with your pet’s nutrition.
