Many types of skin irritation and breakouts are caused by the misuse of a towel to dry off. Here are a few things to keep in mind when reaching for your towel:
After showering or washing your face it can be easy to get in the habit of grabbing the nearest towel to dry off, but this can cause skin irritation and breakouts. What you need to keep in mind is- the cleaner the towel, the better. You’ll want a separate towel for hands, body and face; you don’t want to use a towel on your face that has been used on your hands or other parts of your body. This also goes for drying off after showering. If you’re going to dry your face, dry it first and then move on to the rest of the body. The reason for this is that the towel collects oils, dead skin cells and bacteria as it moves across the body. Also, the moisturizers, fragrances, and cleansers meant for the hair and body are often heavier than those meant for the skin on your face and can cause breakouts. Your towels should be replaced and cleaned every couple of days, and it is important to make sure they are drying completely after use to avoid mold and fungus. If you are very prone to breakouts, I would suggest trying to avoid drying your face with a towel completely. I would recommend lightly patting your face dry with a paper towel or wrapping your hands around your cheeks and sweeping excess water off the face using your hands. These steps seem simple, but bad towel hygiene is a leading cause of breakouts. Keep these things in mind and your face clean and clear!
