If you stopped anyone on the street and asked them about getting older, we could probably bet that anyone would say that getting wrinkles is not a part of aging they are excited about. With it being a known fact that as we age, so too does our skin, why do so many of us wait until we are older to do something about it? Sure, many of us try to wear hats when in the sun or not smoke too much, but there are so many more ways to ensure healthier aging for our skin. When wrinkles come, many older men and women scramble to the cosmetics store to spend hundreds on anti-aging serums, and thousands of dollars on plastic surgery and fillers to get rid of wrinkles. If you are a human that is blessed to live long enough to see wrinkles show up, surely it is a good sign of a long life, but you don’t have to show it on your face! Check out these 5 anti-aging beauty secrets to start now. If you are anywhere from 16-40 years old… this means you!
1. Eat Less Sugar
I have gone one many times about the importance of diet in your beauty routine, but this message specifically applies to aging skin. You’ve heard about collagen, right? The magical substance that holds your entire body together. Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body and is found in your bones, muscles, skin, and tendons. When collagen breaks down, so does your body in te form of wrinkles, sagging skin, and even aches and pains. Simple carbohydrates and sugar breaks down collagen in your body by spiking your insulin and making you age faster. Let’s not pretend we will all go out now and not ever eat sugar again, let’s be real. But one thing you can do is keep in mind that sugar is not just something you can gain weight and work off later; eating too much sugar can age you irreversibly if you are not careful. So just eating much less can do loads for your skin’s health and anti-aging efforts.
2. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize
Many of us who pay attention to our skin use a moisturizer and this basic knowledge of skincare should not be overlooked when talking about anti-aging. Wrinkles can result from lack of moisture, and it doesn’t happen overnight. This happens from many many days of improperly moisturizing your face. I’m not just talking before you go to bed or before you go into the sun, but having moisturizer on your face always is the key. Focusing on your under eyes (bags), around your eyes (crow’s feet) and by your mouth (smile lines), on your forehead and in between your eyes. The reason these are target areas is because this is where our faces move when we make expressions, so over time they start to wrinkle, but if you keep the elasticity in your skin through moisture then they should bounce back better and remain smoother than if they are dry for many days, weeks or even years on end. Have a separate eye cream for around your eyes because the skin below is much more sensitive to drooping, so it is important to not use anything too heavy under your eyes. Using natural, organic moisturizers, and those infused with essential oils and Vitamin C are a great option.
3. Use sunscreen
Religiously use sunscreen anytime you are exposed to UV rays. Avoid tanning beds, and wear sunglasses to protect your eyes. The reason a baby’s skin is so soft, and all of the other parts of your body like the underside of your bicep are typically much softer, smoother and younger-looking is because they are exposed to less sun. Going out in the sun is important for longevity too, because of the life-giving benefits of the sun’s rays and vitamin D, but your skin doesn’t have to suffer. Covering your face with a hat and wearing sunscreen can be the most effective thing you can do for protecting yourself from aging more quickly than you need to, preventing wrinkles, and the dreaded “leather skin”.
4. Don’t forget your hands, neck, and chest!
There are certain triggers that show someone’s age right off the back. Surely the face is one, but the chest and hands are just as important. It has been said that in ancient times, men could tell a women’s age by her chest; how much her breasts have sagged and how wrinkled or spotted her skin was. Don’t give your age away so easily. The good news is, there are things you can be doing every day to help yourself age more gracefully. When applying skin care, don’t stop at your jawline. Apply your moisturizer to your neck, all the way down to your chest, ever single time. Also be sure to use an all natural hand cream. Make it a part of your beauty routine to apply before bed every night, so you have uninterrupted moisturize all night long. Remember that your hands are always exposed, so don’t be afraid to apply a lotion with SPF in it daily and wear gloves in harsh winters and windy weather.
5. Supplements and anti-aging foods
Moisturizer and sunscreen are so important for the external effects, but there are many ways you can start your anti-aging regimen from the inside. Taking beauty supplements like biotin, vitamin B7 and Vitamin C are essential for keeping the elasticity of your skin. Foods such as bone broth restore collagen, eat foods high in healthy fats such as walnuts and avocados, and antioxidant-rich foods such as blueberries and goji berries when they are in season.
