5 Skin Care Rules Never to Break

Clear skin is a sign of youthfulness and health. No matter what beauty trends come in and out of fashion, clear skin is always something to be admired. As your canvas for setting makeup, or days when you want to go all natural without any makeup at all, these 5 clear skin secrets are ones every woman needs to know. Knowing these clear skin secrets comes with knowing your own face, body, and health.

  1. Stay Hydrated

We hear it all the time that the secret to clear skin is staying hydrated. Drinking more water is a key way to having clear skin, but do you really know why this is true, and how much water you yourself should be drinking?  The answer can be quite simple. Your skin is the largest organ in your body, and is the point where toxins are released. If your skin is hydrated, your skin will be more bright and elastic, and less likely to be acne prone, flaky, or dull in appearance. The easy to remember rule of thumb is to be drinking (at minimum) eight 8 ounce glasses of water per day. Keep in mind, much of your food contains water as well. Fruits like watermelon are great for getting hydrated more quickly, and coconut water can be even more hydrating that water, keeping in mind that these are high in sugar, so moderation is key.

2. Stay Clean

When you think about how often you wash your hands, it seems silly that we only wash our faces rarely. When your face is exposed all day long, to germs, debris flung around in the wind, and whatever else comes in contact, it’s important to make sure you are keeping your skin clean. When dirt and grime gets onto your face, it’s not big deal, but when it stays on your face for a long time and makes its way into your pores, then it can turn into unsightly blackheads and acne. To keep your skin clean, always wash your face in the morning before applying makeup, and in the evening before bed. A gentle cleanser usually is a good bet, but it depends on your personal skin needs. Exfoliating 3 times per week can help rid your skin of dead skin cells and stubborn dirt as well. Additionally, make sure you are using a gentle toner on your face even after cleansing, and periodically throughout the day when you’re not wearing makeup. You’ll be surprised at how much dirt comes off your face even after you’ve cleansed!

3. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize

After you cleanse your face, the dirt and grime should be all gone, horray! Unforuntately, though, so also gone are many of your skins natural oils. to reintroduce your hydration to your skin, use a natural moisturizer after cleansing. Products with Rose are great for clarity and brightening, and Vitamin E enriched serums as well can help your skin stay moisturized and healthy throughout the day.

4. Eat for healthy skin

There are so many ways that your skin can be healed and clear simple by adding and removing certain things in your diet. Incorporating leafy greens such as spinach and kale (add them to your smoothies if you just can’t bear to eat a salad). Eating more dark berries such as blueberries and Acai are high in antioxidants (once again, adding them to a smoothie is an easy way to get your daily dose). Drinking tea instead of coffee can provide further polyphenols and avoid the tendency of caffeine to dry out your skin. Avoid eating processed carbs and keep your sugar intake at a minimum. When you do need to have some comfort food an just can’t shake your sweet tooth, try a healthier alternative or a teaspoon of honey before binging on something that will cause your skin to become inflamed. Simple diet changes can make all the difference for keeping clear skin.

5. Keep it simple

There are so many products on the market today, each telling you why they are different and how to use them. It’s important to pay attention to your skin’s specific needs, and find what works for you. After you have found the products that work well for you, stick to them for 6 weeks or so, and then decide if you like it or not. If you do, stick with it. Try not to over complicate things or confuse your skin by trying a different product every week. Go natural, makeup free at home and use some all natural skincare treatments and masks. Your skin was not meant to be buried under makeup and heavy serums all the time. Let your skin breathe by going makeup free whenever you get the chance.
