Our strict diets and health routines are something we should be diligent and proactive about, but sometimes getting too strict with ourselves can cause us to miss out on a little fun. Next time you and friends want to grab a drink, go for it. Don’t skip happy hour, just do these 5 things first.
1.Pre-hydrate
Drinking coconut water on a night of drinking is a great idea to avoid a hangover the next day. After all, hangovers happen in the first place when the body is dehydrated. Drink lots of water throughout the day, starting first thing in the morning, and continuing into the evening. Alternate water and coconut water. Coconut water is extremely hydrating and high in potassium, so don’t wait until after you’ve drunk to hydrate– start early.
2. Exercise
Exercising before a night of drinking revs up your metabolism, burns some extra calories, and expends some energy. If you’re going to be out drinking, it’s better to have your body in a healthy state before you do. Working out can even curb your appetite a bit, helping you not to have more than you should.
4. Choose your drink wisely
Ginger has stomach soothings properties, opting for a drink with ginger such as a Moscow Mule is a great choice because it has lime, vodka, and ginger without the sugar of most other cocktails.
Lime delays insulin release, meaning it’s good for more than just a nice tequila chaser. If you’re going to have a cocktail or beer. Add extra lime (be very generous), the lime will help your body handle the sugar more pleasantly.
Red wine is a controversial topic in the health world, but more often than not it is linked to heart healthy properties. Drinking good quality red wine in moderation can be extremely beneficial for your health at best, at the very least, it is better than most other alcohol alternatives thanks to that boost of antioxidants that come with it.
Drinks with coconut water are also a great choice if you want to “dehydrate while you rehydrate”, and are craving a tropical style drink. Many bars don’t have coconut water, but it’s a great choice for at home and beach days.
4. Eat dinner, (a big one)
Eating a big dinner isn’t typically the weight loss advice, and you should try to avoid eating a big dinner right before bed on most days. However, if you are going to be out all night drinking, then eating a big dinner is a great idea because the food will essentially soak up the alcohol, much better for you than drinking on an empty stomach. Eating dinner before will also help you avoid those late night munchies.
5. Leave charcoal, face wipes and water by your bedside
If you get home late, and are a little more than tipsy, washing your face and drinking water is the last thing you actually want to do. Leave a glass of water by your bedside with charcoal pills, the charcoal will help your body detox and rid much of the toxins that come from drinking. Before you hit your pillow to snooze, grab a face wipe to get the extra dirt and makeup off your face. Of course, washing your face is best, but it’s better to prepare for the worst.
